Miscellaneous Ramblings

Charles Moore - 2005.09.19 -Tip Jar

ForLatelast week, Allume Systems released StuffIt Standard 10 for MacOS X. Like version 9 - but unlike earlier versions - StuffitStandard now has just two modules: DropStuff (which incorporatesthe functions of the former freestanding DropTar and DropZipmodules) and the freeware StuffIt Expander.

There is now a compression format pulldown menu from which youcan choose Stuffit X (default), Stuffit, .tar, and .zip, aswell as a variety of segmenting options.

However, OS X 10.3 Panther and 10.4 Tiger have built-in filecompression and archiving. Want to compress a file or folder forattaching to an email message? Just Control-click or right-clickits icon and then choose 'Create archive of [file name]' from thecontextual menu that appears. A .zip copy of the selected file willbe created, leaving the original untouched.

It's all very quick and slick, it's always there for instantuse, and .zip archives are certain to be openable by your PC-usingfriends, while lots of PC owners don't have Stuffit. So why doOS X users need Stuffit any more?

Well, first, it's a good idea to keep your copy of at least the freewareStuffit Expander component of Stuffit Standard up to date, and it'savailable as a standalone download. There really is no substitutethat matches Stuffit Expander, and if you have been experiencingdifficulty opening compressed files, you should probably downloadthe latest version.

Unstuff Formats supported by Stuffit Expander 10:

.sitx, .sit, .zip, .sea, .tar, .bin, .hqz, .gz, .bz2, .tgz,.lha, .mime, .rar, .arc, .pf, .uu, .uue, .exe, .cab, .yenc, .z

As for DropStuff, it still has a substantial advantage incompression efficiency. As a comparison test, I compressed the same1.3 MB folder containing text documents using the built-in Tigerarchive command and Stuffit Standard 10 DropStuff respectively. Asyou can see from the Get Info screen shots below, the Stuffit .sitxfile at 208k is nearly half the size of the zip archive at 394k. Ifsmall file size is a priority, Stuffit is still the way to go.

The point I was most particularly interested in when checkingout in Stuffit 10 was whether its speed had been improved. Stuffit9 was maddeningly sluggish on my G3 iBook, especially when comparedwith Tiger's built-in archive function, which is satisfyinglyzippy.

Dropbox

I'm delighted to report that with version 10,Stuffit's speed performance has improved - a lot. DropStuff Isstill slower that the Tiger Finder archive command, but the gap hasnarrowed substantially. A tip of the hat to Allume's softwareengineers for a major efficiency improvement with this build.

Aside from the enhanced speed, the most significant new featurein Stuffit Standard 10 is that it can compress JPEG photos andimages by up to 30% with no loss in image quality. In a test run,Stuffit Standard 10 reduced the size of a 664 KB folder full ofJPEGs to 304 KB, less than half as large. However, Stuffit'sadvantage over the Finder archive command was much less pronouncedin this comparison than with the folder full of text files, as thezip archive was a compact 332 KB.

There have been quite a few reports of buggy behavior in theearly going with the more powerful and system-integrated theStuffit Deluxe 10, but I've encountered no problems so far withStuffit Standard 10.

One oddity I've noticed is that Stuffit X files compressed inStuffit DropStuff 9 and 10 show up with generic icons on my OS9.2.2 desktop. With version 8.0.2 Stuffit X files, the proper iconswere supported.

Stuffit Standard Edition 10 compresses files up to 98% smallerso email attachments don't bounce back when they exceed the sizelimits imposed by many email systems. The smaller files save andregain disk space, maximize bandwidth, and accelerate upload anddownload time.

Expander allows you to access any file, download, orattachment

Bottom line: For speed and convenience, or for file sharing withthe dark side, Tiger's archive function works great, but for thesmallest file size and comprehensive expansion versatility, go withStuffit.
